How to make textured watercolour buttercream in three easy steps
Start with your smooth buttercream covered cake a.k.a. your blank canvas (to learn how to do this, see the full tutorial by Jay in the September 2020 issue of Cake Decoration & Sugarcraft magazine)!
1. Pop some of your buttercream into two separate bowls and add a drop of the rose colouring to one bowl and three drops of rose to the other bowl and mix. Now you have your colours ready.
"My secret to the perfect buttercream is to whip it on a high speed for as long as possible – 5-10 minutes will make it the perfect texture to work with!"
2. Take some of the darker rose buttercream using your palette knife and spread the colour as you wish around your cake. Use your smoother to smooth out the buttercream. Pop back into the fridge for 10 minutes to firm.
If you love getting creative with cake, Cake Decoration & Sugarcraft magazine is for you, packed with inspiration, step-by-step tutorials for cakers of all levels, techniques, top tips, expert advice and all the latest from the world of sugarcrafting!
3. Take some of the lighter rose buttercream using your palette knife and spread the colour to contrast the dark rose around your cake. Dragging the smoother will mix the colours together and create a beautiful watercoloured and textured look. Pop back into the fridge for 10 minutes to firm.
And that’s it!
