Make your own sea food platter using miniature sea shells found on the beach this summer ...
A picture of the crustation you are trying to make always helps with the realism of the finished food, so look it up on the internet or in a cookery book before you start, and your platter will be mouthwateringly good!
You will need:
Selection of open mini shells i.e. Scallops, Limpets, Clams or Mussels
Polymer clay in translucent, black, orange, yellow, white
Black marker pen or paint
Mini Plate or platter
Scallops - Translucent & Orange Polymer Clay
• Form a mini sausage of translucent and cut into slices
• Arrange centrally in the shell
• Add a tiny curved sliver of orange to one side
Limpets (a favourite of the Romans) - Grey clay
• Mix translucent with a tiny spot of black to make grey
• Roll into a log and slice into roundels
• Place centrally in shell and indent slightly in the top
Mussels - Yellow clay with black marks
• Mix a dull yellow with a tiny spot of black & translucent clay
• Form into little flat bean shapes
• Press into the shell
• Add black markings for the beards to the edges after baking
Clams – Cream clay
• Mix translucent with a pinch of yellow and a pinch of white so it is a bit streaky
• Roll into little balls to fit within the shell
• Gently tease out a couple of little horns at one end of each clam with your craft knife
- Bake all the shells and their fillings on a baking tile for about 10 minutes at 130 degrees in a domestic oven.
- Allow to cool before arranging on plates or platters with a green leaf garnish as desired.
- Glue in position with PVA.
- Coat each piece of sea food with a gloss varnish to give that just cooked sheen.
- Tiny flecks of parsley can be made by dotting with fine green scatter material whilst the varnish is wet.
